Life On A Chain Lyrics

I live on a chain
And you share the same last name
As a joke
I sent a bottle of whiskey
As you choked
You said it made you feel dirty
And I was waiting over here for life to begin
I was looking for the new thing
And you were the sunshine
Headed my front-line
I was alone
You were just around the corner from me.

Time alone is good
I spend my days in the city
Dirty neighborhood
You know you’ll never convince me
So I sold the town away
I couldn’t wait to forget you
Was killed in half a day
I hadn’t time to regret you
And I was waiting over here for life to begin
I was looking for the new thing
And you were the sunshine
Headed my front line
I was alone
You were just around the corner from me.
Yeah

I, I’m still on the chain
And you
Had the same last name
As a joke I sent a bottle of whiskey
As you choked
You said it made you feel dirty
Waiting over here, for life to begin,
Still looking for the new thing
And you were the sunshine
Headed my front-line
I was alone
You were just around the corner from me.
Yeah

You are the sunshine
Headed my front-line
Just around the corner from me
You were
You are the sunshine
Headed my front-line
Just around the corner from me
Just around the corner from me

I've sat down and tried to figured out this song. "I live on a chain and you share the lat name" is definately indicating a spouse and "as a joke" seems to me that the marriage has gone bad. The rest of the chorus suggest that he was lonely (probably just out of another bad relatioship ("looking for the new thing"), she was on hand ("just around the corner from me") and he jumped into marriage too quickly. I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not, but it seems reasonable.

i feel like by saying he lives his life on a chain, it's like there are a million other links but none are more important than the other. and by saying they share the same last name, it's like she's in the same situation. and by waiting for life to begin and looking for the new thing, it's like feeling incomplete and you feel alone like no one truly understands you... but it's like she's there and always been there but he never never knew her or noticed. but then he didn't want to be with her and tried to do his own thing, but that didn't work. i think the whole song is him thinking in retrospective about how she was good for him and by the end he's come to the realization he loves her still. i'm not really sure though if this is plausible but i'm an aspiring writer, and in high school we had to evaluate poems the same way stanza by stanza

My Interpretation

Mmm I've been trying to figure out the meaning of this songg...and I deff. relate to what you're saying. Maybe there's no real specific story behind the song though....and I think we're entitled to our assumptions about what the song is about. No comment is either right or wrong..

um, this one can either be about something that didnt work out (as both the replies before me have said) or it could be about something that DID work out.

you can look at it two ways - either it was a convenience thing and it didnt work out, or he had been looking forever without any luck and it finally turned out to be a girl who had been there all along and now its great. tough to say

I heard this song was about a girl that he met while on a vacation when he was a teen. I don't know if that's true or not but it makes sense...I guess...

I think it's about a close friendship - maybe even a sister or mom given the last name lyrics.

Clearly were his guidance and help, and when he deserted them shit went badly. It's all interconnected. "Sent a bottle of whiskey" to me relates to "dirty neighborhood." Basically his new life without them doesn't appeal to them, and without them things aren't going well for him.

This as a break up song but I always through it was from the point of view of the someone glad it ended. I don't like the sun shining in my eyes when I'm looking for a new thing and if I'm alone, despite you being just around the corner from me, I clearly don't want your time.

I live on a chain And you share the same last name (im Married but you recently left me)

As a joke I sent a bottle of whiskey As you choked you said it made you feel dirty (i sent you the stuff because i know you hate whiskey from your last experience and it will remind you of me)

And I was waiting over here for life to begin ,I was looking for the new thing (i was looking for someone to be with and i found you) And you were the sunshine (you made me happy) Headed my front-line (you were my first choice) I was alone (i didnt have anyone) You were just around the corner from me. (and you were convenient)

Time alone is good I spend my days in the city ( i have to get away from you) Dirty neighborhood (I no longer like living near you) You know youll never convince me So I sold the town away (so i decided to move) I couldnt wait to forget you Was killed in half a day (but that was short lived) I hadnt time to regret you ( im still not convinced you dont want me back)

I, Im still on the chain ( im still in love with you) And you Had the same last name (but you moved on) As a joke I sent a bottle of whiskey As you choked You said it made you feel dirty (i did this again to see if i get a reaction)

Waiting over here, for life to begin, Still looking for the new thing And you were the sunshine Headed my front-line I was alone You were just around the corner from me. Yeah (i hope you come back)

I think it's not a break-up song at all. In fact, I see it as a song about finding a new love after a break-up with an old flame. I think the verse everyone is getting wrong is the first verse. It should read like this:

I live on a chain. And you share the same last name... as a joke. I sent a bottle of whiskey. As you choked, you said it made you feel dirty.

To me - this is indicating that both of them were in relationships. But, they must've known each other.

I think the remainder of the story is about him eventually being freed from the existing relationship and falling in love with the new girl. The killed in half a day, means he was right back in another relationship after the previous one (time alone is good... I was killed in half a day).
