I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.
Hit dirt, shake tree, split sky, part sea
Strip smile, lose cool
Bleed the day and break the rule
Live win, dare fail
Eat the dirt and bite the nail
Then make me miss you
Then make me miss you
So wash your face away with dirt
It don't feel good until it hurts
So take this world and shake it
Come squeeze and suck the day
Come carpe diem baby
Draw lead, piss wine, sink teeth, all mine
Stoke fire, break neck
Suffer through this, cheat on death
Hug the curve, noose the time
Tear the map and shoot the sign
Then make me miss you
Oh yeah, then make me miss you
So wash your face away with dirt
It don't feel good until it hurts
So take this world and shake it
Come squeeze and suck the day
Come carpe diem baby yeah, suck it
Live win, dare fail, eat dirt, bite the nail
Strip smile, lose cool
Bleed the day and break the rule
Hug the curve, noose the time
Tear the map and shoot the sign
Then make me miss you
Come on, come on
Then make me miss you
So wash your face away with dirt
It don't feel good until it hurts
So take this world and shake it
Come squeeze and suck the day
Come make me miss you
Come carpe diem baby
Come carpe diem baby
Strip smile, lose cool
Bleed the day and break the rule
Live win, dare fail
Eat the dirt and bite the nail
Then make me miss you
Then make me miss you
So wash your face away with dirt
It don't feel good until it hurts
So take this world and shake it
Come squeeze and suck the day
Come carpe diem baby
Draw lead, piss wine, sink teeth, all mine
Stoke fire, break neck
Suffer through this, cheat on death
Hug the curve, noose the time
Tear the map and shoot the sign
Then make me miss you
Oh yeah, then make me miss you
So wash your face away with dirt
It don't feel good until it hurts
So take this world and shake it
Come squeeze and suck the day
Come carpe diem baby yeah, suck it
Live win, dare fail, eat dirt, bite the nail

Come carpe diem baby
Come carpe diem baby

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

Yo La Tengo
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version.
Great version of a great song,
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
Some sexual innuendo, too.
it's actually "cheat on death" which would keep that number of cussing down....
im with Kookkie on this one, its about living every day of your life to the fullest. And yes, James has cussed in songs before (Fuel, Whiplash, Am I Evil, So What, Damage Inc.) i know theres a few more, but im just naming some of them. I doubt the sexual inuendo, because Carpe Diem means "sieze the day" and i dont see how any of it is anything sexual. And whoever submited this fucked up the lyrics pretty bad.
This song kicks ass, The solo is just so fucking cool. You can just imagine Hammett rising on some huge kind of plinth as he plays it. Very good though, one of the best songs on Reload. That bluesy opening riff is fucking awesome.
i think i read somewhere that this song is based on JaymZ getting burned during a concert in Detroit
Seize the day, dude!
p.s. - "shit" is that the first time James has ever cursed in one of his songs?!?!? I doubt it, but I've never noticed it!

@mattziman He’s sworn since Kill Em All. Two fuckin’s alone in Whiplash. The most memorable swear word for me in any Metallica song is the line “I’ve outgrown that fucking lullaby” in Dyers Eve.
nah dude one of the lines in Fuel is "fuck it man, White knuckles tight!" so it may be the second or third but your right they don't do alot of swearing in the actual lyrics of the songs...they seem to reserve most of that for when they're actually onstage or doing an interview..
One of my favourite metallica songs because of its simple yet fundamental meanings.
PS - the lyrics are very messed up.
the lyrics up there ^^^^^^^^ aren't entirely correct.
