Carry You Lyrics

green river flows
like grass melting
later it will run black down it's track
into an ocean
she stands onthe bridge
dim light on her back
well someday
i will carry you
i will carry you
i will carry you
i will carry you

i wanna float high
above waves of electric wires
and stare down onto the street
i see a drunk with glazed eyes
tellin me about the girl i should meet
someday
i will carry you
(repeat 6x)

"Green river flows like melting grass" is a simile. The author is just trying to get an image in your head. In this case it is off a river that is reflecting green grass on its surface. "Later it will run black down it's track into an ocean" The sun is setting so the water takes on a black. "She stands onthe bridge dim light on her back" Picture a girl standing on a bridge over this river with the setting sun at her back. I think this image is what the singer wants you to see. I would say he is looking at her from affar and only wishes he could be with her. The next part is about what it seems it would feel like to him to be in love. Souring over the world looking down on it. At least, thats what I think it means :).

As much as I like this song, I don't understand some of the lyrics. .. Actually, I don't understand any of it (except the I will carry you).. And I don't even understand how that fits in with the rest. Ideas anybody?

i love this song as well. It is confusing but what i can see is how the green river flows like grass melting.. here its like when grass is being burned it turns black like the green river which turns black running into the ocean. A dim light against her back on a bridge gives a possible dreary image. maybe the writer of this wants to take the girl the drunk man said he would meet away from this dreary place and float high above all someday when he find her or makes her his own..????

Hmm.. yeah. That sorta makes sense...Perhaps he is daydreaming about the girl he will find eventually. .. I think the daydreaming fits in with some of the surreal images.. "float high above waves of electric wires".. and "green river flows, like grass melting".

i think he is talkin about love as a fire, grass melting, the its black, looks like somthings burnin there. and then about the drunk thing i think he says that because you lose the sense of reality when you are in love

could it be possibly that it's about a dream, and how he will carry whomever it is with him?

to me its got a stalker quality to it. I seem to think of it as a guy who looks at this girl who stares at the stares at night. He is always hoping to be with this girl and that why he says he will carry here. The drunk part i think is just used for irony because he has meet the girl. This is just what I think.

Well honestly i dont really get the grass part. But i totally agree with the part of thinking about a girl that he wants to meat some day. This girl is like the perfect girl hence the dim light on her back. The light is sort of like the light in a lot of relihous pantings. Halo like if you will. This girl is his dream that he wants to meat. The drunk dude is just one guy that knows what hes looking for. He is able to dream because hes not a stiff like everyone else. Well maybe thats what it means

To me, the beginning of the song before the chorus, is just imagery. well-worded imagery. it just reminds me of the kinda 'living in the moment' moments that Walt Whitman told of. But instead of the connections and awareness in nature that he described, I think this song is describing those feeling with a person. What I mean is, how a person's eyes can be opened up to everything beautiful when they are so in love.
As for the rest... Carry you is just promising a person for security. Wanting to be with them every step of the way.

The drunk with the cool glazed eyes, to me, is just what it sounds like. You know those old, drunk, small-town men you run into that give you random advice? That's what that sorta seems like to me. More connections with people.

A whole world is painted with this song. A small town, walking through the woods with a person you love. Stopping at a bridge and watching the beauty of that person blending with the rest.

Love. That's all it is.

heh some interesting symbolic assumptions. Perhaps he sits conjuring peaceful, tranquil thoughts, writing down whatever he may feel fits? I very much doubt he is literally sitting next to a lake with green reflecting. Longing for a lover on the other hand...
