Grey Street Lyrics
"Grey Street"
Oh, just sitting while she listens
She says I don't need this place
It seems a million years she's stuck here
But says nothing of what she thinks
She thinks, "Hey,
How did I come to this?
I dreamt like anybody else one night
I would be a beautiful princess."
But then the roads in the park fall
And then she rode the line in
And the colors mix together to grey
And break me out
Oh, when I'm indifferent
She prays to God most every night
Although she swears He doesn't listen
There's hope in her that He just might
She says, "I pray
But then my prayer fall on deaf ears
I'm supposed to take it all myself
To get out of this place."
She feels the lumps in the heart fall
And she rose up in the back
She hears the cars scream out from outside
And she whispers sometimes about this
But the colors mix together to grey
And wake me up
Oh, he grows up living
He says take what you can from your dreams
Make them real as anything
It takes the work out of the courage
She said, "Please,
There's a crazy man standing outside my door
I live on the corner of a dead end street
At the end of the world."
Oh, and the rocks out in the heart fall
And she dreams her way to life
And she knows no one will lift her
So she might as well do it herself
And then bummed out and worried
Of leaving city life
But all the colors mix together to grey
On Grey Street
On Grey Street
To Grey Street
Oh, when it comes down in your loving
Oh, well then baby it's right
You say you think you are nothing
No one else will do it for you
Reach up and grab hold of the sunlight
When you are waiting for what's right
You're holding on your Heaven
Won't leave you, yeah, yeah...
And the colors mix together to grey
Wake me up, wake me up, wake me up
To grey.

I saw an interview with dave and this song represents depression, thinking and listening wondering how did i get stuck here, and is it up to me to get myself out of this and everything being grey, and stuck on grey street, the other version of lyrics saying how she would use colors bold and bright, it a magnificent song, and from what he said if you ever been depressed you know exactly where grey street is, i believe it was on a an E entertainment show or VH1
That's the sense I get from it. When you are depressed, no matter where you go, no matter who you meet, no matter what you TRY, everything is effected by the same bleakness. Someone can give you the most beautiful advice on life, and they can seem crazy because it cannot apply to you because you are stuck "on a dead end street at the end of the world." Given humans' tendency to confabulate their own version of truths so there is no dissonance with what they are experiencing, I think that someone gave the character in this song good advice,...

Given humans' tendency to confabulate their own version of truths so there is no dissonance with what they are experiencing, I think that someone gave the character in this song good advice, inspiring words, tossed her a line to help her out of her hole, but since she was not in a position to help herself, she just accuses him of being some crazy dude outside her door and someone PLEASE HELP ME FROM HIM.
There have been times where I was depressed, my friends gave sage advice, and I've gotten mad at them and pushed them away, because it was ultimately ME who had to help myself.
I always thought of this song as being someone (not just a girl) who is watching her life pass her by. she has been at the same point in life for so long and wants to move on but can't, almost as if she's trapped in limbo....you know what i meen
you just described me.. sigh
you just described me.. sigh
^^^ From "Captain" I believe ;)
A lot of people think this song is about his ex Julia Grey (because of how "grey" is spelled). Well, I read that in South Africa, where Dave was born, they spell "gray" with an 'e', not an 'a'. I mean, if you look at the lyrics, it definitely speaks more about religion than about a g/f, IMO.
I think it's mostly about how a lot of people shove different religions down your throat, and force you to comply and accept what THEY are saying...instead of finding out for yourself. I think everything can be summed up in these lines:
"No one else will do it for you Reach up and grab hold of the sunlight "
IMO that's what the whole song is BASICALLY saying...obviously there's a lot more detail to it ;)
"And people say oh look at the way the girl dances her life away oh even more then that all the crazy, crazy things she does"
"And people say oh look at the way the girl dances her life away oh even more then that all the crazy, crazy things she does"
I have many versions on the song "captain" and I don't think those lyrics are from that song...I have been looking for that song everywhere

To me, the song is about depression and dealing with the pains of depression. The feelings of worthlessness and being trapped are dead on. Also some people who suffer from depression have a grey tint to everything they see. Dave gets the feelings spot on.
Ohhh God, I could not relate to the girl in this song more.
I think for me it's about realizing that you need to work to achieve your goals in life. Its talking about a girl who wonders why she can't get out of her situation, and she tries different personalities that are represented by colors but when she mixes them together she still just gets gray.
Lillywhite Sessions have differant lyrics, i like both versions. Probably my favorite Dave song...this week. she's trapped in the poor lifestyle no one, not God, not her family can help her escape. She learns she must do it herself, the lines "reach up and grab hold of the sunlight" and "Take what you can from your dreams" show this.
whoever put these lyrics together, did a good job taking different verses from different live shows.... you should check this song out live i fyou havent. excellent stuff
This is one of my favorite DMB songs. I'm not quite sure why, but I just get a feeling from it. I liked Lillywhite better tho because it kinda made things more extreme in her mind, and when you hit a mood like this, you're mind hits extremes. Both r really good tho and I really hope he plays this at the concert I'm going to (2 weeks!!!).
"And people say oh look at the way the girl dances her life away oh even more then that all the crazy, crazy things she does" PLEASE DOES ANY1 KNOW WHAT DMB SONG THIS IS FROM?? OH YEA GREY STRET GREAT SONG!!!!
