Athena Lyrics

nothin' really makes sense
the azure in the sky
never had it on my wish list
it caught me by surprise
all we needed was a river to follow
and fall in...

lay down athena
in your sea of wine
lay down athena
lay down tonight
and fall

looking through the wrong lens
with shadows in my eyes
you were hiding in the open
standing by my side
all we needed was a river to follow
and dance in

lay down athena
in your sea of wine
lay down athena
lay down
lay down
lay down

crimson river we follow
(we collide we collide)
we'll be safe in tomorrow
(we glide we rise we rise)

lay down athena
in your sea of wine
lay down athena
lay down tonight
and fall

This seems like it could have several meanings to me... first off, the name Athena. She is a Greek goddess of wisdom and war, isnt' she? Could this be significant to this Athena's character?

And then the crimson river she is following... blood? Are they committing suicide together- is this a lesbian relationship? I get the feeling that it is somehow- "nothing really makes sense, never had it on my wish list, it caught me by surprise, all we needed was a river to follow and fall on"... anyone else think this might be a lesbian relationship between singer and Athena? adn "hiding in the open, standing by my side"... a friend she never thought of as more until one day?

Then the sea of wine... is this Athena a habitual alcoholic, is she perhaps drinking herself to death? This I think is unlikely... lol, I have thoroughly confused myself.

This seems to be about someone who unexpectedly finds love, but does not know what direction to go, hence, "all we needed was a river to follow, and fall in." She is trying to convince herself to surrender to the ocean of intoxicating emotions within, but is hesitant because as athena, her life is guided by her head and not her heart. Trying to examine the situation with a rational mind distorts her vision,"looking through the wrong lense, with shaddows in my eyes" because not all matters should be analyzed from that angle. She wants so badly to surrender to that feeling and knows that that if she did, they could "rise" above everything, and "be safe in tomorrow." However, the off-key sound of "fall" at the end, suggests that she never did.
