Soldier Through This Lyrics

You work too hard
So when you come home to me, you're tired
And you don't want to talk about it
You envy my drive
And how I am motivated

We'll go down to the park
Check out the carnival for a ride
And try to forget all about it
I'm out of control
And you don't appreciate it.

Believe it
I need it
I feel intoxicated
I love it
I want it
Don't make me leave you for it

You say I have changed
Self-centered and vain
And you don't respect me for it
The world is the same
So I play the game
And you've got to hate me for it

So we're re-arranged
There's no one to blame
But still you resent me for it
I call all the shots
I hold all the cards
And you feel emasculated

Believe it
I need it
I feel intoxicated
I love it
I want it
Don't make me leave you for it

Believe it
I need this
I feel intoxicated
I love it
I want it
Don't make me leave you for it

How do we reconcile this?
How do we reconcile this?
How do we reconcile this?
How do we reconcile this?

We're able to soldier through this
We're able to soldier through this
We're able to soldier through this
We're able to soldier through this

I've always thought this song is about a bad significant other, or possibly a parent. I think it's "check out the carnival for a while", not "check out of the carnival for a ride"

I'm surprised there arent really any comments on this amazing Garbage song. The first half of the song, I think, is while a destroyed relationship is still trying to go on (but obviously isn't working). The second half is prior to the relationship. Basically, the person telling the story is talking about how the tables completely turned on the other, and it makes the other person feel like the person singing changed for the worse, when in fact they changed for the better and it just makes the other person look bad.

I absolutely love this song, my all time favourite.

I agree with simplycomplx, BUT I think it makes the other person feel very insecure rather than making them "look bad". ;-)

Oh, and I think the last lines should be "are we able to soldier through this?" and not "We're able to soldier through this"

This was written around the time of Shirley Manson's divorce from Eddie Farrell. My thought on the lyrics is that Shirley's sudden rise to fame had caused a great deal of tension in her marriage. Her husband is left feeling frustrated and emasculated. While Shirley feels herself unable to give up the music that gave her stardom in order to make her husband happy. "Believe it, I need this, I feel intoxicated, I love it, I want it, Don't make me leave you for it."
