My Lover's Box Lyrics

My lover's charms
Are in a box
Beneath my bed
And piece by piece
I'll cherish them
Until the end

Send me an angel to love
I need to feel a little piece of heaven
Send me an angel to love
I'm afraid I'll never get to heaven

They burn my hands
Scar my face
And blind my eyes
I steal your breath
And throw away
What I despise

Send me an angel to love
I need to feel a little piece of heaven
Send me an angel to love
I'm afraid I'll never get to heaven

Between these walls
And darkened halls
I've done my time
If I should die
Before I wake
Then you'll know why

Send me an angel to love
I need to feel a little piece of heaven
Send me an angel to love
I'm afraid I'll never get to heaven (piece by piece)

Send me an angel to love (piece by piece)
I need to feel a little piece of heaven (piece by piece)
Send me an angel to love (piece by piece)
I'm afraid I'll never get to heaven (piece by piece)

Piece by piece
Piece by piece

Send me an angel... (piece by piece)

I just think she's lonely. The relationship is over and she can't help but look over all the mementos of the past, "my lover's charms", just means pictures or gifts he might have gotten her. Things that remind her of him. She can't let it go. She may not be in love with him, but she misses feeling so strongly for someone. She's just plain lonely. "Send me an angel to love", I think she just wants something perfect, something that wont let her down, "feel a little piece of heaven" after the melancholy feelings she's felt after losing love. She's afraid she'll never be ok, never love again. This song is exactly how I felt after a two year relationship of mine ended with someone I really loved. It's just the worthlessness and loneliness you gotta feel when a major relationship splits.

this is a really simplistic personal interpretation....but when i was dumped by the first person i loved, i listened to this over and over. i didnt think i would ever be happy again- so i wanted someone to "send me an angel" so i could feel ok again.

I think this song is about a girl who thinks she is bad. her dreams tell her of thinks like "They burn my hands Scar my face And blind my eyes" to make her afraid. She wants an angel to love because she is afraid she will never go to heaven and she is not loved because she thinks she is bad...

"I'll steal your breath and throw away what I despise" : she has been hurt by her lover, and now she's afraid of feeling love for someone ever again, in case she suffers like she has with the previous boyfriend. So she decides to choose the aspects of the personality of the person, and to throw away the others, those which "burn her hands" and "scar her face"... so she wants an angel because an angel is flawless...

Sounds like she's obsessed with someone, (either an ex-boyfriend or she's just stalking someone) and she keeps stuff from him in a box under her bed. She feels that if she can't get him, his things will give her a "little piece of heaven".

Actually, this song, like Tell Me Where It Hurts, is based off of Belle de Jour.

I think it's a reference to the part in "Belle de Jour" where the japanese man has a box with some buzzing device that scares most of the other whores.

I'll just go through the song via the verses, then the chorus.

my lover's charms are in a box beneath my bed -- the relationship is over and she has her mementos close to her as she sleeps. and piece by piece I'll cherish them until the end. -- each letter and photo and memory has its own special significance which she will treasure forever..

they burn my hands, scar my face and blind my eyes -- but they hurt her. they remind her of what was. holding them is painful; the tears well and track like acid down her face. I'll steal your breath and throw away what I despise -- that revenge that you entertain when you're hurting. either by death or by jealousy, then she'll discard the parts she can do without, just like he did her.

between these walls and darkened halls I've done my time -- the loneliness and darkness you feel you reside in, dwell in.. are trapped within if I should die before I wake then you'll know why -- the prayer with a twist. she's asking to not wake up.

send me an angel to love -- desperation. pleading with whoever's above to bring her someone who won't hurt her. I need to feel a little piece of Heaven -- she's lonely and afraid to trust anyone. at least an angel won't deceive her. I'm afraid I'll never get to Heaven -- she knows she's wrong. afraid she'll be alone forever but also afraid to put herself out there to be shredded again.

even the music in this song is integral to the telling of the story. especially at the end, during the 'piece by piece' part. it sounds like a plane nosediving towards the ground from a great height, symbolising her "fall from grace", so to speak. she knows she's a darker-natured soul, and her begging for a "piece of Heaven" just sends her further and further down into her own personal Hell..
