Long time favorite, very calm and relaxing song. Doesn't describe exactly what the problem is. But describes the reaction I have when something bad happens. Lots of thinking to yourself before sleep comes

This song is about the horrible nights after a bitter break-up.

Seems like all of the things That you gave your mother Have all gone up in smoke -- This sounds like the guy who broke up with her was also bad to his mother. Or how he de-evolved into a bad guy. All the things going up in smoke signifying the change and ruin. Also, that Shirley implies that she feels compassionate towards his mother being left behind/burned by him because she also knows what it feels like.

In the middle of the night You don't know what I'm thinking But still the stars still sparkle and shine -- There is no communication between them, but she still loves him.

Seems like all of the time Our boat was slowly sinking You didn't even seem to mind -- The relationship was obviously failing and he did nothing to help the situation, just sat back and let it fall apart.
