I always thought this song was about marriage. Basically he's proposing that even though their lives are crazy, they need to talk about where the future takes them. And he's definitely pro-marriage. It could also be talking about having a child, but regardless its some life changing situation, which also makes the song incredibly applicable to almost any situation.
