I take the meaning of this song in two ways:
One) It is based on a relationship that could have been, or was, beautiful. "We were a painting you could never frame" explains that well. It also shows the act of betrayal through, "Every lover's got a little dagger in their hand"
Two) With a few nods to the Covid-19 Pandemic in the album, "So Much (For) Stardust," I think of "The Apocalypse" as Covid, and "Sending my love from the other side" represents how we could not interact and had to quarantine.
