Massacre Lyrics

last call, last dime
you generalize all the time
I hate to tell you but your slip is showing
and I hate to see you walk around not knowing

I know I say that I ran away
but we both know how it's just talk
at the end of the day
if the time every came
who would run away if they knew they could walk?
it was easy, too easy to do
you ever walk out on me baby
I'm coming after you
I'm coming after you

broken people can't be stopped or saved
we're like hurricanes or tidal waves
leave a little mark on you like "oh, so what?"
so does lipstick around the sidewalk end of a cigarette butt

you know lately you don't even call me
half of the time when you tell me you will
you know they could bury this town into the cold ground
before they'd ever slow down that rumor mill
it just churns and turns out
another every other couple down
until I hear from you I've got to listen to what's going around

there's nothing in this world I would rather do
than roll around forever in some heaven with you
if there ain't no heaven that'll be alright to, won't it?
hell no, it won't but what are we going to do about it?
nothing

but, baby, maybe just call me
once in a while when you tell me you will
you know they could bury this town into the cold ground
before they'll ever slow down that rumor mill
it just churns and turns out
another every other couple down
until I hear from you I've got to listen to what's going around
until I hear from you I've got to listen to what's going around
[going around, what's going around, going around]

Cover art for Massacre lyrics by Hard Working Americans

This song was written by Todd Snider around the time he was breaking up with his wife, Melita Osheowitz. The pain of breaking up has fueled many songs and, in some cases, entire albums. This song focusses on a particularly painful point where Snider apparently wasn't able to contact his wife (for some reason) and was forced to rely on what he was hearing from the rumor mill about ... ???

That being said, there are some weird bits of ambiguity in this song. Early on the writer talks about "walking away" but, soon after, says "I'm coming after you". It seems like the Snider can't decide whether he wants to stay or leave.
