I think this is a really difficult song to interpret without the songwriter’s input, but I have always felt this song was relatable most to me in my early twenties. I was a burned out gifted kid trying desperately to finish college. I felt like all I could do most days was go to work, cook dinner, and get high. But I still had this drive in me from when I was younger, like I wanted to accomplish everything at once but I had no energy to do it. This is seen most directly in the line “ When I decided to wage Holy War It looked very much like staring at my bedroom floor” in that I wanted to do something important, but all I could do was take a shower, maybe. At minimum, the song is about the singer feeling trapped from pursuing her dreams, whether it be depression or a higher power
To me it’s just a song about injustice and frustration, she’s angry at God or the Creator that made a world with so much suffering. She’s filled with rage and would like to be more passive sometimes. The ending to me clarifies this, where she’s clearly saying that she can’t have it all: you can either have talent, creativity and intelligence or you can be good and passive and accept the world as it is.
