Pass Away Lyrics
I was as happy as a can of beer in a wino’s hand
Well things are strange round here but I do what I can
You can count me in for domestication
You can count me in for whatever you want
This too will pass away
This too will pass away
It’s sad to think they won’t always be this way
As if I needed something to depress myself
It’s easy to be wary of what we all call happiness
But if you leave your mark then that’s OK
This too will pass away
And this too will pass away
This too will pass away
This too will pass away
Well things are strange round here but I do what I can
You can count me in for domestication
You can count me in for whatever you want
This too will pass away
This too will pass away
As if I needed something to depress myself
It’s easy to be wary of what we all call happiness
But if you leave your mark then that’s OK
This too will pass away
And this too will pass away
This too will pass away
This too will pass away

As a teenager growing up in England , I first heard Tom Verlaine at the local indie disco (the only one in my town ) , vinyl and the John Peel show our only access to new music and this track only a b side but .. they should know that I cherish it as does my brother and others who heard it at that time . If it’d had a third chorus and middle 8 (ha!) I’d have released it as a single .. I would correct the first line, isn’t it ‘as happy as a can of beer in a winos hand “ ? which I think is a painfully poetic and beautiful.. his vocal delivery is affecting x
