you were good to me (with Jeremy Zucker) Lyrics

Lying, isn't better than silence
Floating, but I feel like I'm dying

Still no matter where I go
At the end of every road
You were good to me
You were good to me, yeah
I know it's easier to run
After everything I've done
You were good to me
You were good to me

You were good to me
You were good to me

Leaving, isn't better than trying
Growing, but I'm just growing tired

Now I'm worried for my soul
And I'm still scared of growing old
You were good to me
You were good to me, yeah
And I'm so used to letting go
But I don't wanna be alone
You were good to me
You were good to me, yeah oh

God only knows
Where our fears go
Hearts I've broke
Now my tears flow
You'll see that I'm sorry
'Cause you were good to me
You were good to me

And now I'm closing every door
'Cause I'm sick of wanting more
You were good to me
You were good to me, yeah
Swear I'm different than before
I won't hurt you anymore
'Cause you were good to me

Cover art for you were good to me (with Jeremy Zucker) lyrics by Chelsea Cutler

(This song kinda reminds me of John Mayer's Comfortable)

The song is about two people, the singers, who were previously in a relationship. Some time after their relationship ended, they both began to miss what they previously had together. The song ends on a hopeful note indicating that their fire burn yet again.

Lyrics analysis:

> Lyin' isn't better than silence > Floatin', but I feel like I'm dyin'

We start with the man's perspective. He's been wandering since they split, trying to move on from her. It's not working, and he's coming to grips with that in this verse. "Lyin'" is ... perhaps to himself in an effort to forget her? Or perhaps he is a roaming romantic who has lied and been lied to by bedmates? Anyway, "silence" represents the opposite of his lying because, well, it's hard to lie while silent. While he's silent, I think he can finally come to grips with not moving on. And this is why he's "floating, but feels like [he's] dying."

> Still no matter .. you were good to me

Both the woman and man sing as a duet, representing both of them longing for each other after time has past, despite "every road" and "everything I've done" since.

> You were good to me > You were good to me

She conveys how she profoundly misses him. Perhaps her singing solo second represents it taking longer for her to realize this?

> Leavin' isn't better than tryin' > Growin', but I'm just growin' tired

Instead of trying to make the relationship work at the time, she left him to grow on her own. She regrets that now. It wasn't worth it and she's "growin' tired"

> Now I'm worried for my soul > And I'm still scared of growin' old. > You were good to me > You were good to me

She's starting to ache for him.

> And I'm so used to letting go > But I don't wanna be alone

Another solo from him, he's realized his own folly and admitted.

> You were good to me > You were good to me, yeah, oh ...

Finally they sing together in harmony. This is where they meet again and straighten out their past .

> Swear I'm different than before > I won't hurt you anymore

They're gonna try again.
