Q&A

Brooklyn, August, 1998 Lyrics

He slept on the roof for a week
In the summer of ’95
Convinced he was closer to heaven
Convinced he was more alive

Drink ’til you’re sick,
Yeah, it’s good for you
Drink and then drink some more
Leave a list of the things
That you wish we were
Stuck to my bedroom door

[Chorus:]
I can’t survive without the summer
The summer can’t survive without me
I can’t survive without the summer
Without summer,
All I’ve got is your memory
Without summer,
All I’ve got is your memory

We drove to the beach
And we stayed there
’Til the bottles and bodies rolled in
We’d return to our room
And we’d plan our escape
’Til the night died and day would begin

Will you turn off the light
When you leave here?
I want them to know we’re away
Come take anything
That you might need here
Come take all of these years away

[Chorus]

Cover art for Brooklyn, August, 1998 lyrics by Torquil Campbell

Was listening to the song passively while working. I liked it very much but hadn't sat down with the lyrics.

After many listens, the arc of the lyrics "turn off the lights when you leave... want them to know we're away... take anything you need here" pierced right through the filters. And I thought, what, did he just say he wants to be stolen from?!

I typed up the lyrics because I had to hear the story. So Canadian. So Torquil. One of the sweetest things I've heard in a while.
