Lil Tjay
Oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh

Can't change, I remember what I've been through
So when I spit, no need for pencils
Traumatized, shit be fuckin' with my mental
Done seen some shit I can't get into
I'm just tryna be somebody influential
A lot of souls I could vent to
My success is not something coincidental
And if you feel like I'm shittin', it's accidental

I was locked down, locked down, almost lost it
Brodie locked down, told him "Fight, don't you forfeit"
Sometimes we just do some stupid shit when we be off it
I done see too many niggas die, so I'm precautious
Thinkin' 'bout them flashbacks really get me nauseous
This is what this comes with, playin' with them bosses
Could have caught a hammer charge, the other day, I tossed it
Worry 'bout my freedom, every day got me exhausted
I gave niggas trust, real love, and they crossed it
Tried to keep you around, I brushed it off, it's like I forced it
Mad that you can't be me, I be drippin' different sauces
Glad I started winning, tired of takin' all these losses, losses
Losses, losses, all these goddamn losses
Tired of takin' all these goddamn losses

Can't change, I remember what I've been through
So when I spit, no need for pencils
Traumatized, shit be fucking with my mental
Done seen some shit I can't get into
I'm just tryna be somebody influential
A lot of souls I could vent to
My success is not something coincidental
And if you feel like I'm shittin', it's accidental

Big glow, lookin' back, I came a long way
I still be reminiscing moments from my dog days
That's why I stay away from niggas in they slug ways
I can't handle no bad vibes, they exhaust me
Lotta niggas in they Birkin, they be salty
Niggas heavy on my body, get 'em off me
New ice, see it's shinin', it's flossy
'Bout to cop a new whip, mine and it's costly
Had a dream to make it out, it wasn't simple (make it out)
Niggas don't know what I went through (no, no)
Self taught, had to learn the fundamentals ('mentals)
I ain't tryna be resentful (no)
I was layin' lowkey, but I'm meant to
'Cause everybody sojudgmental
If you want it, run and get it, fuck a gentle
Let that hunger deep inside represent you

Can't change, I remember what I've been through
So when I spit, no need for pencils
Traumatized, shit be fucking with my mental
Done seen some shit I can't get into
I'm just tryna be somebody influential
A lot of souls I could vent to
My success is not something coincidental
And if you feel like I'm shittin', it's accidental

I was locked down, locked down, almost lost it
Brodie locked down, told him "Fight, don't you forfeit"

Thinkin' 'bout them flashbacks really get me nauseous

This standalone single from the Bronx rapper was produced by Woodpecker. The track was released on October 30, 2020.

What the artist means Lil Tjay is out to prove that he's not just a flash in the pan, he's crooning about all the sad things that he's been through and he's not even fronting on this track. He's detailing all the evil things he saw in the hood, like guys getting shot, getting killed and so many sad losses. He's tired of taking all these loses and that's why he's not even chilling in going super hard in the rap game. He's riding this beat so effortlessly and he's letting all the listeners know that his come up was never so simple. He lets us know that he's never going to change because he knows what he's been through. He closes the song by reechoing the running theme as the beat calmly plays out and fades away.

What the song means to me This song was created by one of the best new spitters in the rap game and one of the last exponents of the much appreciated emotional subgenre. He's revealing so much on this track; I fell in love with it from the first note till the last bar. He's flowing between singing and rapping so effortlessly and it's super refreshing seeing a new-gen rapper make a bubbling hit without a big name feature. The track gives me so much hope in better times because if Lil Tjay can make it out, I sure can too! I will give this song a rating of 9/10.

Overall about difficult moments of disappointment and vulnerability. Having hope and longing, while remaining optimistic for the future. Encourages the belief that with each new morning there is a chance for things to improve. The chorus offers a glimmer of optimism and a chance at a resolution and redemption in the future. Captures the rollercoaster of emotions of feeling lost while loving someone who is not there for you, feeling let down and abandoned while waiting for a lover. Lost with no direction, "Now I'm up in the air with the rain in my hair, Nowhere to go, I can go anywhere" The bridge shows signs of longing and a plea for companionship. The Lyrics express a desire for authentic connection and the importance of Loving someone just as they are. "Just in passing, I'm not asking. That you be anyone but you”

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

No Surprises

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/
