Maestranza Lyrics

[Verse 1]
Monday night
Loud in the road outside
I saw the gate coming down
And smoke all around
The south hill
These last days
Con-men controlled my fate
No one is holding the whip
And the oil won't stick
But I will

[Chorus]
Now that a light is on
Now that the water runs
And the heartless are nearly gone
No time to get it wrong

[Verse 2]
Sunday end
Ache for the sight of friends
Though I've been safe in the thought
That the line we walk
Is the same one

[Chorus]
Now that a light is on
Now that the water runs
And the heartless are nearly gone
No time to get it wrong

[Bridge]
Sometimes it comes to this, no it's true
This time, what comes of it, call it due
I do
I do, I do, I do

[Chorus]
Now that a light is on
Now that the water runs
And the heartless are nearly gone
No time to get it wrong

Cover art for Maestranza lyrics by Fleet Foxes

"These last days Con-men controlled my fate No one is holding the whip And the oil won't stick But I will"

"Now that a light is on Now that the water runs And the heartless are nearly gone No time to get it wrong"

Makes me think of the 2020 election, which was on the horizon when this album was written and released. "These last days" could be the last days of the Trump presidency, and the "con-men" are Trump and the toadies in his administration. If you think of "If You Need to, Keep Time on Me" from the previous album, this song seems like a desperate plea to brighten things up again after things had been thrown into darkness so suddenly half a decade ago. "The heartless are nearly gone. No time to get it wrong!"
