To me (a trans man (FtM) who has been out since 2009), this is very obviously about a transgender person and their feelings of dysphoria and then gender euphoria. Possibly from one already out trans person to another who is doubting themselves. Maybe a supportive ally to their friend. Even recognition that something can be difficult for one person and easy for another. The chorus contains one of the best descriptions of gender dysphoria as I experience it. Especially the feeling like you have forgotten something that you need and is as close to you as your heart beating, but also knowing that you don't have as long as most people in life. That essentially at least part of your life wasn't spent actually living.
