August Lyrics
Salt air, and the rust on your door
I never needed anything more
Whispers of "Are you sure?"
"Never have I ever before"
But I can see us lost in the memory
August slipped away into a moment in time
'Cause it was never mine
And I can see us twisted in bedsheets
August sipped away like a bottle of wine
'Cause you were never mine
Your back beneath the sun
Wishin' I could write my name on it
Will you call when you're back at school?
I remember thinkin' I had you
But I can see us lost in the memory
August slipped away into a moment in time
'Cause it was never mine
And I can see us twisted in bedsheets
August sipped away like a bottle of wine
'Cause you were never mine
Back when we were still changin' for the better
Wanting was enough
For me, it was enough
To live for the hope of it all
Canceled plans just in case you'd call
And say, "Meet me behind the mall"
So much for summer love and saying "us"
'Cause you weren't mine to lose
You weren't mine to lose, oh
But I can see us lost in the memory
August slipped away into a moment in time
'Cause it was never mine
And I can see us twisted in bedsheets
August sipped away like a bottle of wine
'Cause you were never mine
'Cause you were never mine
Never mine
But do you remember?
Remember when I pulled up and said "Get in the car"
And then canceled my plans just in case you'd call?
Back when I was livin' for the hope of it all, for the hope of it all
"Meet me behind the mall"
(Remember when I pulled up and said "Get in the car"
And then canceled my plans just in case you'd call?
Back when I was livin' for the hope of it all, for the hope of it all
"Meet me behind the mall")
Remember when I pulled up and said "Get in the car"
And then canceled my plans just in case you'd call?
Back when I was livin' for the hope of it all (For the hope of it all)
For the hope of it all, for the hope of it all
(For the hope of it all, for the hope of it all)

Swift in this song examines what is like to lose someone that was never really yours from the beginning. “August slipped away into a moment in time/’Cause it was never mine”, shows how something can be lost without really every having you be a part of it. This is a song that explores Swift’s deepest corners of her mind. This song is one of the most influenced by the pandemic as her memories dissociate. It is what she is trying to get back, but never will.
The eighth track of Taylor's new album 'Folklore' was written by Taylor Swift & Jack Antonoff. Produced by Jack Antonoff and Taylor Swift. It was recorded by Laura Sisk at the Kitty Committee Studio (Los Angeles, CA) and Jack Antonoff at Rough Customer Studio (Brooklyn, NY). Mixed by Jonathan Low at Long Pond (Hudson Valley, NY). Mastered by Randy Merrill at Sterling Sound (New York, NY). The track was released on July 24, 2020.
What the artist means On ‘august’ off her latest album Folklore Taylor sings over an acoustic like tune. Her voice radiates insanely like a million fireflies as she ponders about something that was never hers. She's singing about a lover her, a lover of her dreams that got away. She's crooning about the travails of settling and how it's affecting her right now. The beat goes up at some point and Taylor's voice follow suite. She's really sad on this track as she reminisces a lover that was her muse for a while, I'm thinking the lover's name is August or the relationship ended in August. The track feels like another country influenced one and Taylor owns this track without letting her voice get swallowed by the lush production. It's a great effort and I simply can't wait to hear the acoustic version.
What the song means to me A classic tune that evokes the themes of nostalgia and melancholy. One thing I love most about this song is Ms. Swift became unhinged, said screw all this soft singing and ended up giving one of the best vocal performances you can think of. Compared to the rest of the album it holds quite well however it doesn't have that endless vibe that most previous tracks possess. Either way it's a super solid effort. I will give this song a rating of 8/10.
