Unknown (To You) Lyrics

I believe what I say
Why does everyone hear me wrong?
If I told you different, would it sound the same?
Would it make a difference in anyway? Oh no
I know I done wrong I'll pay for it
It's your turn to talk for once I'm listenin'

Say that you don't want me
Say that you don't need me
Tell me I'm the fool
Tell me you've been tortured
Tell me you've been beaten
And what I've done to you
Even if it doesn't matter
Matter what's true
Say that you don't want me
Say that you don't need me
Tell me I'm the fool

Look at all this heartache, what is left?
Forgetting how it started, this is how it ends, oh no
I know I've done some wrong I'll pay for it
But it's your turn to talk, for once I'm listening

Say that you don't want me
Say that you don't need me
Tell me I'm the fool
Tell me you've been tortured
Tell me you've been beaten
And what I've done to you
Even if it doesn't matter
Matter what's true
Tell me that I'm unknown to you
Oh oh oh
Oh oh oh

Say that you don't want me
Say that you don't need me
Tell me I'm the fool
Tell me you've been tortured
Tell me you've been beaten
And what I've done to you
And even if it doesn't matter
Matter what's true
Say that you don't want me
Say that you don't need me
Tell me I'm the fool

Tell me that it's over
Tell me that you mean it
This time is true
Tell me that I'm unknown
To you

Cover art for Unknown (To You) lyrics by Jacob Banks

Jacob Banks’ “Unknown (To You) is a breakup song based on a relationship in which the narrator, by all indications has behaved immaturely. This can be ascertained not from allegations being made against him but rather what he insinuates about himself. And in that regard, it can be concluded that he treated the addressee of this track (his soon-to-be estranged partner) with cruelty, disrespect and indifference.\n\nNow he is faced with a situation in which he knows that they are about to part ways, this time for good. And considering the tone of the song, this is something he is very hurt about despite understanding that he deserves it.\n\nThe titular phrase “unknown to you” is derived from the chorus in which Banks recognizes that not only is the bond coming to an end, but also the relationship is headed down a path when ultimately the addressee will no longer even acknowledge his existence. \n\nAnd that brings us to the true sentiment behind this track. And what’s this sentiment? It’s a sentiment in which the singer is imploring the addressee to be painfully honest with him. He wants them to be honest with him, regardless of knowing that the words which are set to come out of their mouth are not going to please him. In other words, he is actually anticipating they tell him that they have no intention of dealing with him in the future.
