Mjölner, Hammer of Thor Lyrics
[Verse 1]
In the realm of Svartalvheim
Where master forgers reign
Loke met with Eitri and Brokk
With malice and deceit, he got them to agree
To create nine magics gifts for the Asa gods
[Pre-Chorus 1]
Brokkr had a sense of foul play in the air
So he made a wager for Loke's head
[Chorus 1]
Treasures will be forged for the Asa gods
A spear and ring for the Asgard king
But finest of them all, The Crusher it is called
Mjölner, hammer of Thor
[Verse 2]
Loke's treachery knows no boundaries
He hid himself in the blacksmith's cave
But as work progressed, he feared he'd lose his bet
He knew his situation now was grave
Working the bellows
Heating the forge
Striking the anvil
Striking with force
Then as they worked on the last gift
A mighty hammer of war
Loke disrupted the work of the blacksmiths
The handle came out short
[Pre-Chorus 2]
The nine gifts were brought to Odin's mighty hall
As Loke feared the Gods praised them all
[Chorus 2]
Treasures have been forged for the Asa gods
For the Vana prince, a ship and boar
But finest of them all, The Crusher it is called
Mjölner, hammer of Thor
[Bridge]
Brokkr came to claim his price
Loke fooled him twice
He saved his lying head
But got his mouth sewn shut instead
[Chorus 3]
Treasures have been forged for the Asa gods
For Sif they made new hair of gold
But finest of them all, The Crusher it is called
Mjölner, hammer of Thor
In the realm of Svartalvheim
Where master forgers reign
Loke met with Eitri and Brokk

This, as you would expect from Amon, is a perfect telling (very true to the mythology) of the story of the creation of Thor's Hammer named Mjölner.
The story mentions Sif getting new hair of gold. The song doesn't say it but in the mythology, the story begins with Thor waking up next to he beautiful wife (Sif) and finding her completely bald!
Thor immediately goes after Loki, knowing it would have been him that did this, and proceeds to beat the living sh*t out of him. Odin gets wind of this and stops Thor from killing Loki on the promise that Loki will travel to the realm of the dwarves (Svartalvheim) and get new hair for Sif as well as gifts for the Asa Gods.
The only way Loki can convince the 2 best dwarven forgers (Eitri and Brokk) to do this is by taunting them that they cant do it and offering his head as the prize if they are able to create such wonders grand enough to please all of the Gods.
As the song says Loki realises he is going to die when they start creating these wonders, so he sabotages the last creation (Mjölner).
They don't mention how he does this in the song but the mythology tells us he transformed in to a mosquito and landed on the nose of the dwarf working the bellows and bites him.
This distracts the dwarf which means the fires don't burn hot enough and Mjölner is ruined as the hammers handle comes out short.(Loke disrupted the work of the blacksmiths, The handle came out short)
The song and story finishes saying that Loki fooled them twice to keep his head. The mythology tells us that when the items were delivered even though Mjölner's handle was short - Thor loved it anyway.
This means that Loki loses the bet and must lose his head. However, Odin and Loki are known for their silver tongues and trick the dwarves again by saying Loki agreed you could take his head but you are not allowed to take/damage his neck.
As that is impossible Odin agreed that they could instead sew his mouth shut and thats where the story ends. Oh, and Sif gets new hair and its lovely.
I have some questions about this song. I love Amon Amarth and this song but the lyrics confuse me. I actually created an account on here just to get some clarification.
The first verse says: “To create NINE magic gifts for the Asa gods.” What were the nine gifts?
In the song they mention six of them: Gungnir (Odin’s Spear) Skidbladnir (Freyr’s Ship) Sif’s Golden Hair Gullinbursti (Freyr’s Boar) Draupnir (Odin’s Ring) Mjölnir (Thor’s Hammer) What are the other three?
Also, if my memory serves me, three of those gifts weren’t created by Eitri and Brokkr. The Sons of Ivaldi made Gungnir, Sif’s Hair, and Skidbladnir, right?
Don’t get me wrong, love this song, just confused by it. Amon Amarth are usually really true to the mythology and this song seems to take some poetic license with the mythology. Maybe I’m hearing the lyrics wrong? Anyone have any ideas, or could clear up something I’m missing?
