Chesapeake Lyrics

To a world we'll not remember
When we're old and tired
We'll be blowing on the embers of a little fire
We were the tallest person watching in Chesapeake
You put me on your shoulders so I could see

I was all covered in sound
Ear plugs so it wasn't loud
Swallowed up by the crowd
Didn't know what they were singing about
I can't hardly wait
For someone to replace

It was hot in the arena
Good men die like dogs
My hero plays to no one, in a parking lot
Even though there's no one around
He broke a leg and the house came down
A smattering of applause
A sliver moon and a cover song

Oh sweet child of mine
You're always sorry for everything, never apologize
Oh sweet child of mine
Now you stand on the corner and hope you get recognized

I was all covered in sound
When you asked me to turn it down
Didn't even think it was loud
Can you hear it now?

So, just heard this song for the first time and the verse about his hero playing to no one in a parking lot brought back a personal memory from waaaayyy back in 2003.

There was a New York area music festival called "Field Day Festival" in June, 2003 which was moved from the green fields of Long Island to Giant's Stadium in NJ. Long story short, most bands bailed, and by the end it was the likes of Blur, Beck, Beastie Boys, and Radiohead playing the main stage within the "arena" while a secondary stage outside and adjacent to the parking lot hosted the likes of Bright Eyes and Elliot Smith. It was POURING rain that day and the crowd at Elliot's set was small to say the least, more like a group of soaking wet diehards. A young Conor Oberst apparently watched Elliot's set from sidestage. One of the final live shows Smith would ever perform (he was dead within months), it was by all accounts (there are few) a good performance and included a cover of the Beatles song "Long, Long, Long" which coincidentally would be the last song Smith ever performed live.

@litetravelr thank you so much, it's always so cool to see where inspirations come from and to compare how inspiration comes to you with personal experiences. I write a ton of stuff and I wonder if Connor would write abt this stuff the way I do if he experienced it. and also I didn't know about this festival, these bands are the biggest inspirations to me and the music I write. I was raised on beck and radiohead because my dad, and I've really connected with blur, elliot smith, and bright eyes recently. and again thanks so much this song...

this is one of those songs that creates peace and stress all in one in a very comforting way. phoebe describes unsettling events in a way that seems like she's personally telling you a story, like an old friend that just got back from a trip. throughout the album connors, and phoebes lyrics give this same effect, and thats part of why this album establishes so much peace whenever i listen to it. why im writing this is because i cant find any information on what event verse 2 actually is. phoebe and connor usually writes about personal events in a real and poetic way so im just wondering on where verse 2 comes from.
