You’re Somebody Else Lyrics
I saw the part of you
That only when you're older you will see too
You will see too
I held the better cards
But every stroke of luck has gotta bleed through
It's gotta bleed through
You held the balance of the time
That only blindly I could read you
But I could read you
It's like you told me
Go forward slowly
It's not a race to the end
Well, you look like yourself
But you're somebody else
Only it ain't on the surface
Well you talk like yourself
No, I hear someone else though
Now you're making me nervous
You were the better part
Of every bit of beating heart that I had
Whatever I had
I finally sat alone
Pitch black flesh and bone
Couldn't believe that you were gone
Well, you look like yourself
But you're somebody else
Only it ain't on the surface
Well, you talk like yourself
No, I hear someone else though
Now you're making me nervous
Well, you look like yourself
But you're somebody else
Only it ain't on the surface (Surface)
Well, you talk like yourself
No, I hear someone else though
Now you're making me nervous (Nervous)
Where are we?
Where are we?
Well, you look like yourself
But you're somebody else
Only it ain't on the surface
Well, you talk like yourself
No, I hear someone else though
Now you're making me nervous
Well, you look like yourself
But you're somebody else
Only it ain't on the surface
Well, you talk like yourself
No, I hear someone else though
Now you're making me nervous

This song rings hauntingly close to me. I have heard this song is about anxiety. I have suffered from anxiety for many years, and it can truly be debilitating. It can come out of nowhere seemingly, and paralyze a person. I have done alot of spiritual and mindfullness work to overcome and manage my anxiety.
In this society any sort of so called weakness or mental illness is discounted for a ligit experience or feeling. Making a person experiencing anxiety feel small for what is their experience is, is quite simply verbal abuse.
Songs like this contribute to awareness of a very serious affliction for many people, allowing a conversation to be had to validate people and come along side of them. If something can help just one person feel better or have light at the end of a tunnel than good!
To me, this song feels like your older self talking to your younger self and your younger self talking back.. The older you sees what you are and what you\'ll become. You long for the days when you saw yourself as better than you are now. The days of innocence are gone and you\'re left with a shell of your former self. Looking at yourself from your old perspective you\'re scared of what you see and what you hear from this person. It doesn\'t feel like you, or at least not who you thought you were.. You\'re disappointed and you feel hopeless to change what you now are.. Or maybe always were..
I think it's about parent and child relationship, potential, fruition, death. And at the same time how the ghosts of our parents talk to us. We are reflections of them. We strive for approval, and all those we seek acceptance and approval from make us nervous, like ghosts whispering to us in our dark defeats, as well as in our illuminating triumphs because their opinion of us matters to us, even after they are gone. They matter to our own ego's and alter egos. Its an ancient idea that goes to the roots of life and conscious and self conscious. This song is a truly religious experience for me, and I can not help but to think of my father, and my son.
