Like a Child

I once knew a girl; she was hanging on by a single thread,
and there's things that she taught me that I can't repeat.
Just a hint. A little secret. About something bigger than myself,
and now I think that I have fallen much too deep.
If I were to share the things I learned down in the darkness
I'd have the set this house we're in on fire.
With the words that burn but never seem to fully be my own.

I'm feeling weak, like a child, or a man who's walked a thousand miles
Only to find his walk is incomplete.
If I had the time to trace my steps back to that bookmark,
I am certain I would not like what I’d find.
Oh the only way to not look lost when the lights are dead and gone,
Is to tell yourself they never burned for you at all.
They never burned at all. Darkness was all I saw.
And I wandered through the shadow my whole life.
With a single thread I drug my body through the dust and mud and oil,
And now I think I'm gonna lay me down and die.
