The Bug Collector Lyrics

And there's a centipede naked in your bedroom
And you swear to god the fucker's out to get you
And I digress, 'cause I must make you the perfect morning
I try my best to scoop the slugger out the window

And there's a preying mantis prancing on your bathtub
And you swear it's a priest from a past life out to get you
And I digress, 'cause I must make you the perfect evening
I try my best to put the priest inside a jam jar

And there's a millipede angry on your carpet
Well then, I must admit he's staring with a vengeance
Oh and I digress, 'cause I must make you the perfect morning
And I try my best to prove that nothing's out to get you

To prove that nothing's out to get you

Her best friend is going through physical signs of medication mismanagement/ withdrawals after A series of “he was the wrong guy” scenarios creeping in and out of her life. Her friend is aware of how alcohol affects her regular use of medication which can intensify the feelings and paranoia associated with these day to day occuences. The priest being the guilt. The stinging multitudes of legs walking plank over her.. The narrator is the perfect best friend to have during that particular sequence of events by physically being there as she comes down “to prove that nothings out to get you” But I too, digress.

I have no insight but what I took from the song because of my past experiences with schizophrenia is that she “as a little girl” even may have a mother or friend that’s going through psychosis and she’s trying to bring her back to reality. Kinda hit home for me.

this song reminds me a lot of the subtleties of being in an toxic/abusive relationship. Catching ever-present bugs symbolizing the futility of trying to meet the partner's list of demands.

We are exploring a relationship dynamic: there are feelings of guilt, fear, paranoia from the partner, who is putting the onus on the narrator to soothe them. There is a sense of love and a lot of responsibility from the narrator. They are in charge of making the partner feel a certain way, and the song has a mournful sound that adds to the feeling that the narrator is exhausted but can't stop. "I MUST make you a perfect day".

In my experiences with these sorts of relationships, there is deep emotional connection and a deep set need to do everything right for the partner. Often times the partner feels guilty for the pain they know they are causing, but the guilt just makes them lash out more and causes the person to need to 'fix' more and try harder to please the partner.
