Seems pretty obvious. He's likely dreaming of his ex that he hasn't spoken to in awhile, there is always conversation in dreams... but upon waking its near impossible to remember everything that is said.
"It'd been so long, it'd been so long my mind filled in the blanks" Since he couldn't remember what she said, this is likely him filling in the blanks to what he was hoping she said in the dream.
"Is anything, is anything the way it used to be?" This is kind of the dead giveaway, I take it as him waking up to reality wondering if the clock has turned back to the 'good ole days' of a relationship long gone.
This happens to me often, so thats why I figure the lyrics are so obvious as to what going on here.
