Hallelujah (So Low) Lyrics

[Verse 1]
I bleed like a millionaire
Cause my bones lay with dust in your care
Just don't leave this old dog to go lame
This life requires another name

[Chorus]
Oh, so low
(I got lucky this time in the hunt for atonement)
Oh
(I got lucky this time in the hunt for atonement)
(I got lucky this time in the hunt for atonement)
So low
Hallelujah

[Verse 2]
You sold me a second hand joke
Young man, where there's fire there's smoke
Your mouth is fire and smoke
Just don't leave this old dog to go lame
This life requires another name

[Chorus]
(I got lucky this time in the hunt for atonement)
Oh
(I got lucky this time in the hunt for atonement)
(I got lucky this time in the hunt for atonement)
So low
(I got lucky this time in the hunt for atonement)
(I got lucky this time in the hunt for atonement)
Oh
(I got lucky this time in the hunt for atonement)
(I got lucky this time in the hunt for atonement)
So low
(I got lucky this time in the hunt for atonement)
Hallelujah

[Verse 3]
I bleed like a millionaire
Cause my bones lay with dust in your care
Just don't leave this old dog to go lame
This life requires another name

Cover art for Hallelujah (So Low) lyrics by Editors

For me, this is about me having to make the decision to put my beloved dog to sleep because of his degenerative spinal condition - before he was completely lame. I look after his ashes now and I bleed because he was my reason for living and although I have lots of money for now I know that no amount will bring him back.

Hence "this 'life' requires another name".

In reality, Tom wrote these lyrics after visiting a refugee camp in Northern Greece.
