Disillusioned Lyrics

[Intro]
Dopamine
On dopamine

[Verse 1]
We have been overrun by our animal desire
Addicts of the immediate keep us obedient and unaware
Feeding this mutation, this Pavlovian despair

[Pre-Chorus]
We've become
Disillusioned
So we run
Towards anything glimmering

[Chorus]
Time to put the silicon obsession down
Take a look around, find a way in the silence
Lie supine away with your back to the ground
Dis- and re-connect to the resonance now
You were never an island

Unique voice among the many in this choir
Tuning into each other, lift all higher

[Interlude]
Dopamine
On dopamine

[Verse 2]
Willingly been re-wired by clever agents within
Looping our reflections, our obsessions draw us in
Fix and fixation, no sentience beyond

[Pre-Chorus]
We've become disillusioned
So we dive like crows towards anything glittering

[Chorus]
Time to put the silicon obsession down
Take a look around, find a way in the silence
Lie supine away with your back to the ground
Dis- and re-connect to the resonance now
You were never an island

Unique voice among the many in this choir
Tuning into each other, lift all higher

Like all APC's work, this track certainly must have to do with how our society, not just the USA, are addicted to the technology and "silicon obsessions". It's become so bad that people are literally getting fined FINALLY for walking blindly across streets staring at their phones and causing accidents... it's not just the drivers texting, there are so many people out there.. just lost, and now dependent on technology 24/7 and being "connected"... it's not easy to disconnect, but if given the opportunity... it would help heal this world, society, and times we live in.

Pavlovian despair, what an apt description of social media. But I don't read it as a rejection of technology, but a more a need to find balance, to be able to put away gadgets and experience life in the moment, to find the "sentience beyond."

In the music video it looks like a wire-head back-door'd into a section of the dark-web and was given a hack to remove security allowing people out of their walled garden. Many were too lazy & slow to take advantage before security was restored.

"You were never an island"

Love it.

its definitely about societal obsession to shinny electronic toys and needing to have the next best thing, and the dopamine kick it generates because of the excitement? especially the current generation.

Look for the path of the Four Noble Thruths.

"find a way in the silence" and you will find out that "you were never an island".

I love the ruffling of feathers this song is capable of creating to a constantly outraged generation. We take every opportunity to bash and bully each other on social media, rather than to lift all higher. We can be riverside, in front of the most serene and beautiful landscape, but, we don't appreciate because we're either on social media looking at something else, or taking a selfie of ourselves so others can see we were there. It's almost a hippie notion to stop and be in the moment, but, it's lost and panned by today's youth.

The song is basically addressing the problem of dopamine addiction related to the overuse of social media and internet in general. The silicone obsession here is something that affects our perception of reality, because getting any positive reaction for our internet activities (weather it’s true or false) stimulates the brain to release dopamine – the stimulating hormone – and creates a feeling that whatever we do is right. Maynard’s advice here is to disconnect from it and reconnect to the real world to fix our perception.
