Fear Is Like a Forest Lyrics
Fear is like a forest
The dark of the unknown
Love is like a promise
That you'll never be alone
Touch is like a tourist
You know when you are home
It's not that I'm a purist
It's just I'd rather be alone
Books waiting to be written
Love is waiting to be loved
Songs here, underneath my fingers
Waiting to be sung
Nothing will be written
And no-one ever will I love
No song will I be singing
If it's where I'm running off
[Chorus]
But I know that it works
'Cause I've seen that it's true
If you just let it go
It will come back to you
It'll come back in space
It'll come back in pairs
It'll come back in ways
It'll come back 'cause it cares
Come back 'cause it cares
The dark of the unknown
Love is like a promise
That you'll never be alone
You know when you are home
It's not that I'm a purist
It's just I'd rather be alone
Love is waiting to be loved
Songs here, underneath my fingers
Waiting to be sung
And no-one ever will I love
No song will I be singing
If it's where I'm running off
But I know that it works
'Cause I've seen that it's true
If you just let it go
It will come back to you
It'll come back in pairs
It'll come back in ways
It'll come back 'cause it cares
Come back 'cause it cares

Written by Jen Cloher (Courtney Barnett's partner).
I think the song is imploring the listener/telling the tale of how Fear is analogous to a forest - it is dark, isolated, mysterious, one can travel through it or be lost in it - but is is a very inviting as well.
So it seems that Jen is imploring us to come out of the forest, or perhaps not to dwell their too often... If you do, you miss out on the passions and loves that life has to offer.
I think it pairs nicely with the next song on their album "Outta the Woodwork," when Kurty sings "I guess if you're afraid of aiming too high, then you're not really gonna have too far to fall.
