White Snake Lyrics

I dreamed of a time
When little hands were holding mine
And the plans, that we made,
Had fallen apart and gone away
And in the end you'll find
Not all of us were meant to shine

A fleeting glimpse
A knowing look
One last kiss
Can you be there for me?
The air was always there for me
And in the end you'll find
What little hands had in mind

And, babe
Are you there?
Is it too late,
Do you still care?
If your loved one
Sticks around
While little hands hold you down
And in the end you'll find
Hands that hold
Are hands that bind

My take on the song was heavily influenced by a story I have been planning on writing, tbh. While listening to the song I could not shake it from my head how well it fit the story and now it is hard to imagine any other interpretations. I would welcome other ideas though. So, here I go.

The song is about two people, A and B. I don't think I can make sense of the lyrics unless there is no fixed narrator (some things A and B tell to each other, some things they say to themselves).

I dreamed of a time when little hands were holding mine --> A and B used to have something going on. They were very young (or at least B was) And the plans, that we made have fallen apart and gone away --> They had created this whole plan of their life together (or sth. like that), but now it is over and long gone. And in the end you'll find not all of us were meant to shine --> That is B's way of saying that he is in a moment in his life where he understands that love stories not always end up well, like in their case.

A fleeting glimpse --> This makes me believe that by some coincidence (?) they meet again and it is a bit awkward A knowing look --> But they have this understanding of how things are between them One last kiss --> ... Can you be there for me? The air was always there for me --> I think A has lingering feelings for B and this is when A hints at it. A wonders whether B would be there for A because I think B was the one to end things or cause things to fall apart by not supporting A many years ago. It may also be that what A means by 'The air was always there for me' is that all of these years A has felt the absence of B (by missing and needing B, but B was not around for A).

And in the end you'll find what little hands had in mind --> Here starts the most confusing part of the song for me (but it made perfect sense in the story I was writing). I would like to think that B finds out that there was a reason for A to act like A did and probably B understands. Also I think that The last lines of all 3 parts are told from both perspectives (A's and B's). So as B confesses to A, A tells to themselves that B's actions had a reason and it was something justifiable. The addressing of B as little hands continues to indicate that for A, B is still the same person as they used to be (hence the affectionate addressing)

And, babe Are you there? --> This is not gonna make a lot of sense, but here I go. I believe this is sang from B's perspective. A has somewhat moved on on their life, having a current lover. B is trying to reach to A nevertheless. Is it too late? Do you still care if your loved one sticks around while little hands hold you down --> B wonders whether A still has feelings for B and if A's actions from the past can be left in the past. B wonders if the current relationship A is in is stronger than the lingering feelings of A and B for each other.

And in the end you'll find, hands that hold are hands that bind --> I think A and B are very much in love with each other not matter what, and this is A's way of stating the belief that some things never die. What once held B tight (A's hands) will always have a grip on B, and vice versa. And I am crossing my fingers for a happy ending because I am a sucker for eternal love no matter how bullshit it really is (sorry A's current lover, but it is for the best for all 3 of you guys)

Also, in my story A is a male and B is a female, but obviously any combo would fit just as well in the interpretation. So I tried my best not to refer to A and B by he and she (or by the names on my story). In case some gender-indicative wording has slipped my eyes, I am really sorry.
