Toe to Toes Lyrics

I have seen this once before
I have felt these colors
I have known you for so long
When we ran in circles

For our sake
I will wait for you

I walk alone, into the darkness
I came toe to toe and face to face with the beast
He knew me by my name, it was surprising
He knew everything about me that I despised

I have seen this once before
I have felt these colors
I have known you for so long
When we ran in circles

He had gold and he had silver
He had all the women and wine that you'd ever need
Just one thing, a prick of your finger
Spell your name in the sand and do it with your own blood

Bitten by the fangs of circumstance
Outward light a reflection
We are all equal
Underneath the slab of material
Mutable ways of my fortune
Bitten by my fangs

Gave me a smile, gave me a whisper
Lay me down in linens to watch me sleep
I played the fool
I played the sinner
I played the part of me that no one wanted to see

It's a metaphor for addiction.

I absolutely love this song and have had it on repeat for three days now.

The song seems to have two characters, the one voiced by Troy (the harsh vocals), and that by Brent (the higher-pitched one). The protagonist (Brent) encounters a beast alone in the darkness. To his surprise, the beast has been waiting for him, and has known him for a long time. The beast calls him by his name, welcomes him with a smile, and lays him comfortably down to sleep. The beast, it seems, was once a wealthy man with everything anyone could want, but was apparently transformed into a beast by some magical spell (I think this is alluded to by the name written in blood).

So much for the narrative. For the deeper meaning, the song twice refers to the fact that the beast knows the darkest parts of the protagonist, the parts that no one wanted to see, that he himself most despises. So I believe the song is using a mythical form to describe a man confronting his own inner demons, which are allegorized as the beast.

In any case, that's all just a guess. It's beautiful and the music hits me hard.
