To me, there seems to be a lot of religious imagery, particularly references to the heavens. I've always wondered if there was a secondary meaning about the author finding God later in life and wishing he'd done so sooner.
to me it sounds like someone who has grown up and gotten sober, and has met someone who perhaps used to light the fire for them. but due to their maturity and sobriety they cannot cross that line anymore.
Strikes me as a love song about someone who meets their perfect person, their soul mate late in life.
