Burn It Down Lyrics

Always said I was a good kid
Always said I had a way with words
Never knew I could be speechless
Don't know how I'll ever break this curse

Now the world is only white noise
Frequencies that I can't understand
I can't be bothered with the teachers
Always trying to shape the way I act

Burn it down, burn it down, burn it down, burn it down

I'll set fire to the whole place
I don't even care about our house
It's not the same in here since he left anyways

Burn it down, burn it down, burn it down, burn it down

Always said I was a good kid
Always said I had a way with words
Never knew I could be speechless
Don't know how I'll ever break this curse

Now the world is only white noise
Frequencies that I can't understand
I can't be bothered with the teachers
Always trying to shape the way I act

Burn it down, burn it down, burn it down, burn it down

Momma told me all of this is
Just a place we have to settle for
Less than anything we dream on
We'll continue to be disappointed

I feel down, I feel down, I feel down, I feel down
I feel down, I feel down, I feel down, I feel down

Burn it down, burn it down, burn it down, burn it down
Burn it down, burn it down, burn it down, burn it
Burn it, burn it

The song is beautiful as are all Daughter songs. And just like many Daughter songs, there are a few ways to interpret their lyrics. Since the song is both about a key character from the video game that this song is tied to, (Chloe from Life is Strange: Before the Storm), as well as about an empowered and pain ridden female, here is my very general interpretation that could apply to both. YMMV.

Always said I was a good kid Always said I had a way with words Never knew I could be speechless Don't know how I'll ever break this curse

She is not who she thought she was. She is shocked at her state of helplessness. For her to overcome the circumstances could require her to take bold action.

Now the world is only white noise Frequencies that I can't understand I can't be bothered with the teachers Always trying to shape the way I act

After questioning herself she is now questioning everything around her, including those who have influenced her. (In the greater context of the song, this questioning is fueling her desire to take action since she is now relying entirely on her own instinct.)

Burn it down, burn it down, burn it down, burn it down

This realization of needing to act is very strong and profound and is thus exemplified in the repeated and haunting chant of the chorus "Burn it down". The repetitive nature reinforces her desire.

I'll set fire to the whole place I don't even care about our house It's not the same in here since he left anyways

She is contemplating doing something drastic, contradicting the person she thought she was. But who she was is somewhat irrelevant now, due someone very important in her life being gone.

...

Momma told me all of this is Just a place we have to settle for Less than anything we dream on We'll continue to be disappointed

Growing up she was taught to accept the tough situations in life and to keep expectations low.

I feel down, I feel down, I feel down, I feel down I feel down, I feel down, I feel down, I feel down

But what she was taught did not hold. So here, the chorus is mirrored with a variant "I feel down", which reinforces the realization of her feelings, in contrast to the main chorus which emphasizes the desire to react to these feelings.

[I'm sorry to have ever put you through these feelings. You may never read this but if you do, I love you forever.]
