My girlfriend told me this song is about a girl who loses her boyfriend and mother in an accident and is totally stricken with grief to the point where she can barely exist. All she can do is get up in the morning and watch the sunrise. “Who is in you?” is what she says to the sun because she wants to know what kind of spirit can overcome the sadness in this life and rise every day. “You hide them behind you” means that the sun must somehow get past horrible things that have happened and people who have been lost. “I rise in you” is her imagining that the people we have lost remind us they are still alive in us every day.

@jacobus v1 i heard something similar i think. was this on a blacklist forum somewhere? i couldnt find any evidence of this online just now but i do remember. it could just be a blacklist urban legend tho

i also heard something similar but in this other interpretation the girl was so incapacitated by her grief she couldnt even get out of bed and was just imagining the sunrise -- "I watch the sun rise, It rises in my eyes"
