Change Lyrics

[Verse 1]
There's something in the wind, I can feel it blowing in
It's coming in softly on the wings of a bomb
There's something in the wind, I can feel it blowing in
It's coming in hotly and it's coming in strong

[Pre-Chorus]
Lately, I've been thinking it's just someone else's job to care
Who am I to sympathize when no one gave a damn?
I've been thinking it's just someone else's job to care
But who am I to wanna try? But

[Refrain]
Change is a powerful thing, people are powerful beings
Trying to find the power in me to be faithful
Change is a powerful thing, I feel it coming in me
Maybe by the time something is done
I'll be able to be honest, capable
Of holding you in my arms without letting you fall
When I don't feel beautiful or stable
Maybe it's enough to just be where we are because

[Chorus]
Every time that we run, we don't know what it's from
Now we finally slow down, we feel close to it
There's a change gonna come, I don't know where or when
But whenever it does, we'll be here for it

[Verse 2]
There's something in the wind, I can feel it blowing in
It's coming in softly on the wings of a song
There's something in the water, I can taste it turning sour
It's bitter, I'm coughing, but now it's in my blood

[Pre-Chorus]
Lately, I've been thinking it's just someone else's job to care
Who am I to sympathize when no one gave a damn?
I've been thinking it's just someone else's job to care
'Cause who am I to wanna try? But

[Outro]
Yeah, whenever it does, we'll be here for it
Whenever it does, we'll be here for it

Cover art for Change lyrics by Lana Del Rey

Such a beautiful song, all about changes in the world and within Lana herself. From Lana during a magazine interview: "[...] Something has to change in the world. In the first verse, I sing 'there’s something in the wind, I can feel it blowing in', and in the second verse I sing that it’s 'on the wings of a song'. When I express my thoughts about change through lyrics and music, it can be about North Korea launching missiles or whatever, but it can also be directed inwards."

'Lately I've been thinking it's just someone else's job to care/Who am I to sympathize when no one gave a damn?' - With everything going on in the world, it can get to feel overwhelming, and as if you are powerless. If others don't care or aren't trying to make a change, then why should you?...

'Change is a powerful thing/People are powerful beings/Trying to find the power in me to be faithful' -- ...Nonetheless, Lana is trying her best to keep faith in others and remain hopeful.

'Maybe by the time this song is done I'll be able to be honest, capable of holding you in my arms without letting you fall when I don't feel beautiful or stable/Maybe it's enough to just be where we are because everytime that we run, we don't know what it's from/Now we finally slow down, we feel close to it' -- Lana stated in an interview that "honest, capable, beautiful and stable" shape the image of who she wants to become. When she says "we" in these lines, I feel as though she is having a conversation with herself. From Lana in the same interview: "In the second verse I make it personal, when it’s about being stable, strong, and secure, and not looking for new discoveries when I don’t even have my shit together."

'There's something in the water/I can taste it turning sour/It's bitter, I'm coughing/But now it's in my blood' -- In my opinion, these are the lyrics that are the most unclear in the song. Perhaps the water refers to being in a pure or childlike state, but then the negativities and realities of life "turn it sour." As you become older and more aware of the world, you become somewhat bitter towards others and the world, and it's hard to shake the feeling, as though it's in your blood.

'There's a change gonna come/I don't know where or when/But whenever it does, we'll be here for it' -- Despite uncertainties and negative things happening in the world and within ourselves, we must always look for a positive change on the horizon. We don't know where it will come, or when, but we need to hold onto hope that we'll be here to witness it.
