Don't Mean Anything Lyrics
Dearest mom
I'm always here no matter how far gone
I'm alright without you
Late at night
A million thoughts are caught up in my tree
You're alright without me
It don't mean
It don't mean
It don't mean
Anything at all
It don't mean
It don't mean
It don't mean
Anything at all
And it's a long way back to the middle of the road
Fighting our way back home
It don't mean
It don't mean
It don't mean
Anything at all
Dear old dad
I'm the one and only son you never had
I'll be fine without you
Late at night
I hear you grab your coat and your car keys
You'll be fine without me
It don't mean
It don't mean
It don't mean
Anything at all
It don't mean
It don't mean
It don't mean
Anything at all
And it's a long way back to the middle of the road
Fighting our way back home
It don't mean
It don't mean
It don't mean
Anything at all
And we all fall to the surface sometimes
And we all fall back where we belong
And we all fall to the surface sometimes
And we all fall back where we belong
It don't mean
It don't mean
It don't mean
Anything at all
It don't mean
It don't mean
It don't mean

For me, this song is very relatable, and this I my interpretation of the first two verses, and the two after the first chorus are quite obvious.
Starting with "Dear old dad...", I interpret that his dad left them in the middle of the night and the son thinks that his dad doesn't care enough about them and to assume that they'll be fine without him. He has to grow up without a dad now because the dad never deserved to have a kid he couldn't take care of.
This brings me back to the first two verses where the mom is clearly the one who raised him. He has now moved out and on with his life but he still thinks and remembers his mom. He wants to reassure her that she will be ok now without him in an empty house after all they really had was each other.
Why can't I write shit like this???
It doesn't matter how he progresses in his life he will always (fall to the surface sometimes/fall back where he belongs) come back to earth - and to where he's grounded, at home. Everything bad that happened to him in the past, don't mean anything at all, because even when it tries to push him off the road, he fights his way back to the way he was raised at home. Independent and strong. Remembering of what his dad did to them and to make sure he doesn't repeat his dad's mistakes in his life.
