The song is very easy to interpret. The woman Mary is someone of great importance and how she refers to her through the song would suggest that Mary is either her mother or her grandma. If you were to dedicate this to someone though, it would be easy to come up with your own interpretation. What makes this song great is the emotions you feel for the author. Specifically “we overcome the sirens” which alludes to an ambulance coming to save someone, and then it very quickly gives you the end result by saying “I know someday I’ll see you soon but now your out of sight”. Which causes the emotion of fear, devastation and sadness to all merge without a break to process those emotions. I also love how the author put in short sentences to include memories significant to her to describe her loved one and reference it into being her story book.
this song is a ballad to Mary. Mary can have multiple meanings. Sung by a female vocalist in yearning for another female symbol personified in name….makes me swell ideas that love transcends that which you thought it would never transcend. When we experience this…we become eachother. Mary is the desire transmuted into joy…but the balance of fear and need pull back. we struggle to live in the seams of what overlaps in bringing out joy and yea toon the sanctity of how to push our life towards our perceived best ends. But the line between our future and higher serves is blinded by a ever fading line and peace we find in chaos. Mary is shadow. The grounding our spirit and body use to balance the experience of being human.
A brilliant song both in melody and also lyrically. Adrianne is just a very special artist and when I listen to this on my headphones I swear I feel like I'm levitating. There is also an amazing full band performance of this live from the Pitchfork Festival in 2018. Obviously it's completely different but, equally powerful.

I have no idea what this song is about. To be honest, I've not tried very hard to interpret it. But it just got right under my skin from the first listen and the melody goes round and round in my head. It's a really beautiful song.
