Velvet Ring Lyrics

Chilled in the kitchen of a city tomb
The light would flicker like a violent womb
The night was thicker than a smoky fume
Eliza waited in her room

Ben, he loved her like he loved no one
The way she laughed and held a smoking gun
The way she always said "what's done is done"
And he is not the only one

Love is a gentle thing
Yours is thicker than a velvet ring
Yours is thicker than a velvet ring

A victim here with a sharp sharp blade
And Ben he knew how she was getting paid
Her water broke and they would have to wait

And when he knew that she was fooling
He faced the mirror to avoid the thing
We're out of money and we've sold the bling
And I just want to take you home
I just want to take you home

Love is a gentle thing
Yours is thicker than a velvet ring
Yours is thicker than a velvet ring

And I'm wondering
Ring
And I'm wondering

Cover art for Velvet Ring lyrics by Big Thief

I think that although a good portion of the lyrics in this song serve as simple placeholders, there is a story to this song. Ben, is a man who is deeply in love with his girlfriend, who remains unnamed. Ben knows that his girlfriend is cheating on her, but his love is stronger than most other people's and he chooses to ignore this; this is described by the big line "love is a gentle thing, yours is thicker than a velvet ring". This is also encouraged by the line "he faces the mirror to avoid the thing" which describes how he blames himself for her cheating because he can't handle the truth that his girlfriend doesn't love him like he loves her. Then, Ben finds out that his girlfriend is pregnant, which is described as her "water breaking" in the song. He figures out that she's been getting paid to be seen by another man, but continues to move past it because he is too forgiving and his love is too "thick" to realize that he's wasting his time on someone who does not love him as much as he loves her. At the end of the song, Ben is described as just "wanting to take her home". My interpretation of this is that Ben is saying that he just wants to spend the rest of his life with her without worrying about her cheating, because he is not ready to face the facts. Great song.
