The Great Dominions Lyrics
Suddenly
I came to my senses
a night on fire
put out
all traces of feeling
I'm
only concerned with
looking concerned
I don't want to get my laces burned
we talked for hours
except for the fainting
we seemed so enchanted
but now
my expression is changing
see
see for yourself I'm
run down by a train
I stand back from a shark attack
and it's all the same
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
I should have known
you'd seek my opinion
from all over the country
and out
to the great dominions
careful
some of the blunders of history
have been made that way
I'm still stuck in this
pickle jar
on a paper carpet
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
I came to my senses
a night on fire
put out
all traces of feeling
I'm
only concerned with
looking concerned
I don't want to get my laces burned
except for the fainting
we seemed so enchanted
but now
my expression is changing
see
see for yourself I'm
run down by a train
I stand back from a shark attack
and it's all the same
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
you'd seek my opinion
from all over the country
and out
to the great dominions
careful
some of the blunders of history
have been made that way
I'm still stuck in this
pickle jar
on a paper carpet
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again
mummy I've been fighting again

Julian Cope's psychedelic brilliance slays me. I can't believe nobody else has commented on this song yet. He sounds so desperate in the vocal.
This is one of the most powerful and brilliantly enigmatic songs ever written! Disturbing, mysterious, sad and uplifting. Great to sing along to but what was the fighting and why is he telling his mummy?
Enigmatic genius for sure.
I've never been able to figure out the lyrics, as they are oblique, perhaps he has spoken about their meaning.
But giving it a go, I'd say the first section is about a night of drug taking with one or more people, that starts off well and then turns a sour for him.
The second section seems more general, about being asked for opinions in the press maybe, and not wishing to be taken as any kind of spokesman for a generation. You have to remember how big the band were in the UK at this time.
That's my punt anyway.
