Burst

the street lights
mingle with the night trees
lighting up the leaves green
other leaves all black and dark
and so I bike home
like for years I biked home
underneath the street lights
underneath the night sky
I wish I could explain
what it's like getting older
feeling things for years and years and years and years
feelings harden into pebbles
that I tumble in my pockets
like all the things we pick up
treasures on the sidewalk
chestnut sticks and bottle caps
and rocks, rocks
I wish that I was I
and you were you
but we were the same age
running through the play place
setting off the fire workers
and the sparklers for your birthday
you say you want a gun
you want a space gun
you say maybe your bones have come loose
you say the day you grow up
is that the day I die
you say you're big enough
you say you are the strongest
you say you like what you like
you toss the love around
you transparently lie
I wish that I was I
