I am Dutch, so maybe I get this song wrong because of my lack of English
I think it is about a secret relationship,(although they both have a partner) and deep down inside him he wants it to come out in the open. He is asking her what she would choose I she had to, hoping she wouold choose him over her partner.

I think they are in a relationship that neither of them actually enjoys, more as an image to the outside world. They'd both rather go back to the previous relationship that they ran from. The first sentence shows this I think: would we even be honest to each other in the end or would we keep lying to each other and ourselves.
