European (I Wish I Was) Lyrics

I wish I was
A European
I wish I had
European style

Designer cars
And that way of living
With burning eyes
I could watch you smile

I wish I was
An Afghan
Standing on a hill
Spear and shield in hand

I wish I had
Black zulu pride
And maybe then
I wouldn't need to hide

I wish I was
A better man
But as it is
This is how I stand

So don't you leave me alone
Fighting for the cause
Do I stand alone
When that cause is yours

I wish I was
A European
I wish I had
European style

I wish I was
A European
A European
A European

I wish I was
A European
A European
A European
A European

I wish I

Cover art for European (I Wish I Was) lyrics by A Flock of Seagulls

This song has always been a unique gem in my collection. I assume it is related to the protagonist in this album's concept, who I've heard was a friend of singer Mike Score's who ended up committing suicide. It sounds like this person is wishing he could be a better man for his lover, who sounds like she may have been troubled in some way "stand alone fighting for the cause- when that cause is yours" I'm not sure what the emphasis on being a European is, as the band was from England- maybe it's about an American who wishes he could be most anything but that! Might give him a better image of himself.
