Could it be about standing by yourself (no matter if you make mistakes, that is part of life) and not letting others decide what is right and wrong for you??
The verses to me suggest that they are going through some hardships, but want to struggle through it and emerge stronger by doing it them self. Or it could be that others are pestering them too much, and they are saying I just need time to deal with it my way.
Sometimes the best advice is none, simply listening!!
