Higher Lyrics
Freed of the world
Shed of the weight
Onward to see you my friend
Light years above
(Take me higher)
Time seems to wait
(Take me higher)
Promise to see you again
It haunts to remember
All the memories of that day
Pre-flight demonstration
Led to desperate voices fueled by flames
Now I'm out here waitin'
Hoping you would send a sign
Came a million miles
And the earth grows small as I lovingly leave it behind
Freed of the world
Shed of the weight
Onward to see you my friend
We seem to have found it
All the hope we've been denied
There's more than we've been told
Had to find it on the other side
Now I must be dreaming
Face against the frozen glass
But there's no return now
And the blazing worlds salute
As we go flying past
Freed of the world
Shed of the weight
Onward to see you my friend
Light years above
(Take me higher)
Time seems to wait
(Take me higher)
Promise to see you again
Meet you in the stars tonight
There you find me drifting in the ether within the hill (x4)
Shed of the weight
Onward to see you my friend
Light years above
(Take me higher)
Time seems to wait
(Take me higher)
Promise to see you again
All the memories of that day
Pre-flight demonstration
Led to desperate voices fueled by flames
Now I'm out here waitin'
Hoping you would send a sign
Came a million miles
And the earth grows small as I lovingly leave it behind
Freed of the world
Shed of the weight
Onward to see you my friend
All the hope we've been denied
There's more than we've been told
Had to find it on the other side
Now I must be dreaming
Face against the frozen glass
But there's no return now
And the blazing worlds salute
As we go flying past
Shed of the weight
Onward to see you my friend
Light years above
(Take me higher)
Time seems to wait
(Take me higher)
Promise to see you again
There you find me drifting in the ether within the hill (x4)

The beginning of the song seems to me to be the story of a training accident that took the life of the narrating astronaut's friend.
The second half is him leaving earth, ascending to the heavens to be closer to his lost friend.
Following Exist's theme of leaving earth behind to embrace the cosmic perspective and leave the world and its evil ruling class behind (refer to the stage)
Simply put, its about an astronaut leaving earth, and feeling euphoria for leaving the world and its strife behind.
One of the easier to understand songs of the album honestly.
I know this isn't the actual meaning of the song, but I imagine it to be about death. The references to flight can be imagined as the crossing over into the afterlife. As the narrator looks down upon Earth from the afterlife, he realizes how miniscule our Earthly problems really are.
Lyric by lyric each line seems to be referencing both an astronaut going into space or dying. I don't think this double meaning is intentional but it is definitely interesting to see the parallel between these two ideas.
If we all have forgotten, this band lost a member too young. Not only a co worker but a best friend and really a brother. So I'm sure most of their music has a double meaning so as to not bore us with the same story. So since their white album they have sort of kept each album to a theme in a sense and this one has a lot of futuristic, bigger then what's right in front of you attitude bc they are at that point in the grieving process. Trying to accept we all die and knowing the life / world / space is lighter then the fucked up BS here. So I will be glad to be with u someday. I think this song is actually more from the Revs point of view. Gone a million miles And waiting for his friends to join him in the stars.
