Virtute at Rest Lyrics

Now that the treatment, and anti-depressants,
and seven months sober have built me a bed
In the back of your brain where the memories flicker
And I paw at the synapses bright bits of string.

You should know I am with you.
Know I forgive you.
Know I am proud of the steps that you've made.
Know it will never be easy or simple.
Know I will dig in my claws when you stray.

So let us rest here like we used to
In a line of late afternoon sun.
Let it rest all you can't change.
Let it rest and be done.

Song Meaning

@Josi Thank you for that comment. I heard the song and never thought to connect the dots to old Weakerthan songs.

Cover art for Virtute at Rest lyrics by John K. Samson

This is the third part of a trilogy of song about a cat named Virtute. The first two were from Samson's band, the Weakerthans. The first is about how Virtute laments her owner's decline into addiction, and the second is a heartwrenching story of Virtute sneaking out of the yard and not able to find her way home.

Virtute at Rest implies that she has passed on, but she is alive in her owner's memories. She is proud of how her owner has bettered himself through treatment, and forgives him for his previous behaviour. And she will be a reminder to keep out of addiction ("I will dig in my claws when you stray")

At the end is the strong message, you can't change the past, so enjoy the good memories you have while looking forward.
