Last Call to Heaven Lyrics
"Last Call To Heaven"
Guess I'll walk my ass downtown
I'm so sick and tired of feeling lonely
Come on up from underground
Maybe this time I will find my one and only
Got an angel on my left
Whispering sweet nothings to me
Got the devil on my right
Says look who's back up on the scene
So I duck in to a dive
Two tens and a five‘s all I got on me
I sit down for a spell
Best I just drink from the well
For the money
A sin for a sin
A heart for a heart
Don't know if I'll stay long
Seems like a damn good place to start
The sun crashes into night
Borracho to my right
His red eyes on me
Says his name Jesus
The devil‘s off the noose
And coming for me
I order one more round
Shake my head in disbelief
Start thinking to myself
This is a place you'll never leave
He's heading for the door
He floats across the floor
Like an angel
Crown of thorns goes up in flames
Laughing and deranged like the devil
Collapses at the Jukebox
Praying hands upon his knees
Cries the last call to heaven
Was in nineteen eighty three
Guess I'll walk my ass downtown
I'm so sick and tired of feeling lonely
Come on up from underground
Maybe this time I will find my one and only
Got an angel on my left
Whispering sweet nothings to me
Got the devil on my right
Says look who's back up on the scene
So I duck in to a dive
Two tens and a five‘s all I got on me
I sit down for a spell
Best I just drink from the well
For the money
A sin for a sin
A heart for a heart
Don't know if I'll stay long
Seems like a damn good place to start

I think this song is a metaphor for depression and, more specifically, the irrational loss of hope. I haven't been depressed myself, although I must have come close, but I imagine and hear that it can be a place of darkness in which no hope seems to exist even if a bystander may see it very clearly.
This interpretation may clarify why Jesus Christ was chosen to be a character of hopelessness in this song. Because to demonstrate true hopelessness in its deepest form, why not portray the most hope giving character in history as someone who's lost all hope himself. After all, if he's lost hope what is there for us to hope for?
So, to hit the message home completely, the message seems to be that Jesus Christ has lost and the last call to heaven was 40 years ago. In other words: we're completely stuck down here and there's not a single way back up. Isn't that what depression is as an experience?
If this was the intention of the writer, hat's off. So brilliant. Well, it's brilliant anyway of course.
Let me know what you think.
[Edit: wanted to add a bit of nuance to the statement that I've never felt depression.]
