Money Won't Pay (with augustus) Lyrics
It's hard when you're staying way past five
every single night for some crazy deadline
and we're all so confined by the need
to always make ends meet
cos if you're not earning
you could end up on the street
and that's no place to live
chasing dollars with a baseball bat in hand
some folks'll never understand
and they're asking you to be a man
but the money won't pay
money won't pay to dance the night away
so forget the rent and get on down
working all day, you sure deserve a raise
so let's spin the beat and get higher
but it's true, the parties start too soon
when there's work to do
but you'll always have a crew
who want to be with you
and so when it's back to work again
just think about your friends
and the good times they portend
no this is not the end
money won't pay
every single night for some crazy deadline
and we're all so confined by the need
to always make ends meet
cos if you're not earning
you could end up on the street
and that's no place to live
some folks'll never understand
and they're asking you to be a man
but the money won't pay
so forget the rent and get on down
working all day, you sure deserve a raise
so let's spin the beat and get higher
when there's work to do
but you'll always have a crew
who want to be with you
and so when it's back to work again
just think about your friends
and the good times they portend
no this is not the end

Despite the upbeat tone, I feel like the song is kind of a comment on the troubles of the middle class. Money doesn't pay for the experiences in life, only time does, and "we're all so confined by the need to always make ends meet" stuck working overtime to appease our bosses. It's a song about living only on the weekends, and stuck in a soulless job that pays well, but not enough to truly compensate for the time it's taking away from you.
Money won't pay (for) working all day, the limited time in your life is more important than money. People don't see life that way and will ask you to stay longer to work and to tough it out or "just be a man" for the good of the business while you suffer.
