Bread and Bleeding Lyrics

I'm getting over "most of me"...that's all I give:
Almost always "most of me".
And I'm getting tired!

But I say, "We're doing fine,"
Well, that's what I say: You and I are doing fine.
But this is exhausting, this love, and it's working...

Honestly, I know you know,
And it hurts to say, but we've been here a year or so,
And it feels like blue collar.

All those loving things you said, well they're hard to hear,
And I'm confused and scared to death...
And it's all bread and bleeding, and inside I'm screaming:

This is how it is, all along.
A half-empty bed and you're still waiting up.
I'm coming home again, all alone,
Just tell me you want me to and I'll lay back down.

And I'm sorry, for all my pretending.
But you know me, where else would I go?
And I'm sorry, for all my pretending.
But you know me, where else would I go?
And I'm sorry, for all my pretending.
But you know me, where else would I go?

This is how it is, all along.
A half-empty bed and you're still waiting up.
I'm coming home again, all alone,
Just tell me you want me to and I'll lay back down

Cover art for Bread and Bleeding lyrics by Penny and Sparrow

The meaning behind "Bread and Bleeding" is instrumentally misleading. Luckily, this is done on purpose. The theme of this song is two-fold. The first is the obvious, a struggling relationship. This is displayed throughout the song and shouldn't need any exposition. The second, however, does need explanation. The second theme is the putting up of "fronts". In other words putting on a happy face and telling everyone you're "doing fine". The practice of such a task would be utterly exhausting hence the lyric saying so.

This concept of fostering guises is not only articulated through the lyrics themselves but is also displayed in the music itself. The mood and tone of this song is extremely upbeat given the sadness of the source material. And that is the true genius that Andy and Kyle show in this song. The music itself is putting up a front. The music is trying to convince you that everything is fine and dandy to spite the fact that the lyrics tell a completely different story. A story that is sad and heartbreaking, but a beautiful story nonetheless.
