The Shooting Star Lyrics

On the first light of the day, you'll march on
Departure has arrived, don't look back
Avoid the darkness, they always stay out of site
Until you feel the blast of a shooting star

Following the spark like rockets in the sky
Between the bare and the storm you're getting close
Head north, frozen land where tigers go to die
Don't fear the cold, it'll numb your memories out

You are
In the sky

Learn the skill to stay alive, survival
Since ( ) you're being watched
Reach the tunnel, light the torch, you're on the hunt
Until the light calls you back into the wild

When you get to the other side, please send a sign
It'll fly through the atmosphere in time
And if you hold a truth within your hands
You won't be sent back through the angry door

Everlasting love is ever-growing
I know to watch you and let it grow
Everlasting love is ever-dying
It's in the past, you have to let it go

It seems to be about breaking out of the cycle of illusion. You must stay away from the darkness (ignorance) to see the shooting star (knowledge). Following your beacon out of our universe and through the cold that numbs your memory away, you find yourself cleansed of ego and memory. On the other side, you send a sign to yourself (the shooting star) and you reconcile these two realities.
In the beginning you must let go In order to follow your star, in the end you must hold on, thus reconciling the two realities. The paradox.

My Interpretation

@RoodyPoo It's about letting go of a loved one. Joe lost his mother during the making of this album.

"everlasting love is ever growing Hang onto what you have and let it grow Everlasting love is ever dying It's in the past, you have to let it go"

it's about the breaking out of the past. The shooting star symbolises the ought to march on forward. "departure has arrived, don't look back." "avoid the darkness, stay away, stay out of sight until you feel the blast of a shooting star" It simply means that you have to stay in tact...

I think the latter part of the song is about a near/loved one passing away.

The overall song is just out of this world. Totally Atmospheric.

Song Meaning

The Duplantier brothers had just lost their beloved mother when this was composed. The entire album "Magma" reflects this painful time for them, and this song is an account of the experience.

Having also lost my mother to cancer I immediately related to the gist of this song; the feeling of being left in this world to fend for yourself without that rock that was your mother, and to carry on without her as illustrated in the line: “Learn the skill to stay alive, survival The city is so mean, you're being watched Reach the tunnel, light the torch, you're on the hunt Until the light calls you back into the wild”

It is the sad and frightening realization we face when the day comes that we lose the person that gave birth to us and brought us into this life, and that idea that a new world appears, and we must now navigate it without them, on the hunt until it is our turn -- "until the light calls you back into the wild."

This to me is one of their most profound songs, and it never fails to water my eyes, having walked this path.
