I think the song is about taking the dark things that happen to us in life and internalizing them to create something beautiful out of it like music. sad emotions can b essential to create art, hence the name "dark necessities"

I think, it's about being in love with someone, and sumalteneously addicted of drugs.

Many RHCP songs have one and the same meaning. Just one more song about the relationship of a couple with destructive habits. But that is definitely the best song from 'The Getaway' album. It goes: “Well that’s me looking for we” Not weed :) If you have read Scar Tissue you know that he never had to look for weed thanks to his dad and never bothered much with that mild stuff, he was a heroin and coke kinda guy. :) He never openly names drugs in lyrics, you have to find them in the metafors or dressed up in poetry. He has been “designed” to give in to temptation thanks to his environment as a kid. He was introduced to both drugs and sex at a crazy young age. I believe he was only 7 or 8 when smoking his first joint. But it made him who he is today.

DARK NECESSITIES

This song is a def jam. Can listen to it all day, despite my perception of the lyric's undertones.

My interpretation: The "shadow" is referenced as the likeness of The Fallen Angel. It's darkness is paired to an individual that aspired to fame (as well as others who justly are) to equivocate that with sinister deeds performed, all can attain this shine. Since this individual is already on paperbacks in circulation, the "Dark Necessities" (urges) this person has, is always fueled by nightly moons and opportunities "around the corner" to commit sadistic offenses (i.e. everything must go away) to maintain notoriety.......hence the phrase "You don't know my mind, you don't know my kind. Dark necessities are part of my design."--the individual is in admission of being a serial killer. Thought it was quite obvious. But, maybe my interpretation is misleading.
